Cowboys Ready to Open Training Camp with New Faces, High Expectations

FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys will officially begin preparations for the 2026 season when players report to training camp in Oxnard, California, on July 28, with the first full practice scheduled for July 29. The annual trip to Southern California marks the start of a critical stretch as Dallas looks to build momentum entering head coach Brian Schottenheimer’s second season.

After falling short of postseason expectations a year ago, the Cowboys enter camp with a blend of veteran leadership, emerging talent and a rookie class expected to compete for immediate roles.

Quarterback Dak Prescott returns to lead the offense, which features All-Pro wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and offseason addition George Pickens. Tight end Jake Ferguson is expected to remain one of Prescott’s most trusted targets after re-establishing himself as a reliable option over the middle and in the red zone.

One of the most closely watched players throughout camp will be second-year running back Jaydon Blue. The former Texas standout showed flashes of explosiveness during his rookie season and now has an opportunity to earn a larger role in the Cowboys’ backfield. His speed, receiving ability and versatility give Dallas another offensive weapon as the coaching staff evaluates its running back rotation.

Defensively, much of the attention will center on new coordinator Christian Parker, who takes over the unit after being hired during the offseason. Parker brings a reputation for developing defensive backs and emphasizing aggressive, disciplined football. His system will be one of the biggest storylines throughout camp as players adjust to new schemes and responsibilities.

Dallas is also expected to get an early look at its 2026 draft class. First-round safety Caleb Downs enters camp with expectations of making an immediate impact in the secondary, while fellow first-round edge rusher Malachi Lawrence adds athleticism and pass-rushing ability to the defensive front.

Other rookies expected to compete for roster spots and playing time include linebacker Jaishawn Barham, offensive tackle Drew Shelton, cornerback Devin Moore, defensive lineman LT Overton and wide receiver Anthony Smith. Strong performances during training camp and the preseason could help several of them carve out meaningful roles before Week 1.

Competition across the roster will be a focal point throughout camp. Battles along the offensive line, in the secondary and at several depth positions are expected to continue into the preseason, giving coaches an opportunity to evaluate the team’s overall depth and versatility.

For Schottenheimer, training camp is about more than preparing for the opener. It’s an opportunity to establish the identity and consistency he has emphasized since taking over as head coach.

With an experienced quarterback, proven playmakers, a new defensive voice and an influx of young talent, the Cowboys believe they have the foundation to contend in the NFC. The next several weeks in Oxnard will determine how quickly those pieces come together before the regular season begins.
