FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys are facing a quick turnaround following their 34-30 victory over the Houston Texans, with head coach Brian Schottenheimer emphasizing defensive discipline, player recovery and preparation ahead of Thursday night’s matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
With limited time between games, Dallas is adjusting its practice schedule to prioritize recovery while maintaining the intensity needed to build on its recent success.
Schottenheimer acknowledged the physical toll of Sunday’s game against Houston but expressed confidence in the team’s ability to handle a shortened week.
The Cowboys plan to limit full-speed team work to eight plays on each side of the ball, with much of the remaining preparation conducted through walkthroughs and individual drills.
Defensive Discipline Remains a Priority
Despite the victory over Houston, Schottenheimer made it clear that Dallas must improve defensively, particularly when facing mobile quarterbacks.
The Cowboys have struggled at times to contain quarterbacks who extend plays with their legs. Schottenheimer stressed the importance of maintaining gap integrity and disciplined pass-rush lanes rather than sacrificing defensive positioning in pursuit of sacks.
Those concerns carry into Thursday’s matchup against Tampa Bay, where Dallas expects another athletic quarterback capable of creating opportunities outside the pocket.
Schottenheimer also pointed to pass coverage as a critical factor in generating more consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
“The coverage has to be better,” Schottenheimer said.
He believes improved communication and tighter coverage will give Dallas’ pass rush more opportunities to reach the quarterback.
Cowboys Monitoring Tyler Smith’s Availability
The Cowboys are also evaluating the availability of offensive lineman Tyler Smith, who continues working toward a return.
Schottenheimer said Smith would participate in additional individual drills to determine his readiness. While confident in Smith’s ability, the coach emphasized that the final decision would depend largely on the player’s comfort level.
Dallas also has confidence in T.J. Bass if Smith is unable to play.
Schottenheimer praised Smith’s explosiveness and versatility, describing him as one of the league’s most powerful guards.
George Pickens Embracing Team Success
Offensively, Schottenheimer remains encouraged by George Pickens despite fluctuations in his production.
The Cowboys coach noted that Pickens continues to create opportunities for the offense even when his receiving numbers do not reflect his impact.
Schottenheimer was particularly impressed with Pickens’ reaction following the Houston victory, highlighting his enthusiasm for the team’s success rather than individual statistics.
With defenses accounting for CeeDee Lamb, Pickens remains another dangerous option in Dallas’ passing attack.
Schottenheimer also credited Dak Prescott’s command of the offense, pointing to the quarterback’s familiarity with his receiving targets and the continuity within the system.
Dallas Preparing for Tampa Bay’s Pressure
The Cowboys expect a challenging defensive matchup against Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles, whose aggressive schemes have consistently tested opposing offenses.
Schottenheimer praised Bowles’ experience and ability to generate pressure, emphasizing that Dallas must be prepared for a variety of defensive looks.
With the Cowboys seeking to build momentum before their upcoming bye week, Thursday’s matchup presents an opportunity to continue improving on both sides of the ball.
For Schottenheimer, the immediate focus remains on getting his players physically ready, sharpening their execution and carrying the momentum from Houston into another important matchup.
