ARLINGTON, Texas — Jacob deGrom turned in another vintage performance, and the Texas Rangers backed him with an early offensive surge Tuesday night.
deGrom allowed just one hit over seven scoreless innings as Texas cruised past the Athletics 8-1 at Globe Life Field in the opener of a three-game series.
The right-hander faced only 21 batters, striking out eight without issuing a walk. Lawrence Butler’s leadoff single in the second inning was the Athletics’ lone hit against deGrom, and he was quickly erased on a double play.
The outing marked deGrom’s 12th career start with at least seven scoreless innings, eight strikeouts and no walks. He also reached 10 wins for the second consecutive season.
Texas gave him plenty of support.
Elias Díaz opened the scoring with an RBI groundout in the second inning, followed by RBI singles from Cody Freeman and Brandon Nimmo as the Rangers built an early advantage.
Justin Foscue added to the lead with a solo homer in the fourth inning, his 10th of the season. Seven of Foscue’s 10 home runs have come at Globe Life Field.
Jake Burger finished 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI single, while Freeman collected two RBIs and extended his career-best on-base streak to 11 games.
Nimmo also contributed two hits, an RBI and a sacrifice fly as Texas scored in four consecutive innings.
The Rangers have now won two straight after dropping four in a row. They improved to 37-29 at home this season and continued their strong run when getting on the scoreboard first. Texas is now 44-3 when scoring first and reaching at least four runs.
For the Athletics, the loss extended their skid to four games. They finished August 8-20, their worst August winning percentage since 1978.
Gage Jump took the loss after allowing seven earned runs over 4⅓ innings. His ERA climbed to 5.15 after he posted a 7.58 ERA during August.
The Athletics still lead the season series against Texas 6-5 but need to win one of the final two games to claim their first season-series victory over the Rangers since 2021.
Texas will look to keep the momentum going as the homestand continues.
