TCU Positioned to Make Noise in Wide-Open Big 12 Race

FORT WORTH, Texas — Predicting the Big 12 has become one of college football’s toughest assignments. Every season seems to produce unexpected contenders, and the margin between first place and the middle of the standings is often razor thin.

That’s why TCU enters the 2026 season in an enviable position.

The Horned Frogs aren’t carrying the weight of being the conference favorite, but they have all the ingredients to make a serious run at the Big 12 Championship.

Head coach Sonny Dykes has established stability in Fort Worth, something few programs in the conference can claim. While the Big 12 has experienced coaching changes, roster turnover and aggressive movement through the transfer portal, TCU has maintained a consistent identity built on explosive offense, aggressive defense and experienced leadership.

That continuity could become one of the Horned Frogs’ biggest advantages.

Replacing veteran quarterback Josh Hoover will undoubtedly be one of the season’s biggest storylines, but TCU doesn’t need its next starter to duplicate Hoover’s numbers immediately. The Horned Frogs simply need efficient quarterback play to complement a roster that returns experienced playmakers on both sides of the ball.

Defensively, TCU has the opportunity to become one of the conference’s most complete units. The secondary returns proven experience, while the front seven will be counted on to create more pressure and improve against the run. If the defense consistently wins on early downs, it could give the Horned Frogs an edge in several of the conference’s biggest matchups.

The schedule won’t allow much time to ease into the season. Every week in the Big 12 presents a different challenge, from physical rushing attacks to wide-open passing offenses. Teams that survive the conference are usually the ones that avoid costly mistakes and play their best football in November.

That’s where TCU could separate itself.

The Horned Frogs have developed a reputation for improving as the season progresses under Dykes. If that trend continues, TCU should find itself squarely in the hunt when the conference title race reaches its final month.

A return to the Big 12 Championship Game is a realistic goal, but it won’t come easily. The conference is too balanced for any team to dominate. Still, TCU has the coaching, experience and culture to remain one of the league’s most dangerous teams.

In a conference where consistency often determines the champion, the Horned Frogs appear well-equipped to contend until the final weeks of the regular season.
