BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Dallas Mavericks added frontcourt depth and athleticism Tuesday night, selecting Morez Johnson Jr. with the ninth overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft at Barclays Center.
Johnson arrives in Dallas after a standout collegiate career at Michigan, where he established himself as one of the nation’s most physical and energetic big men. Known for his rebounding, rim protection and high-motor style of play, the 6-foot-9 forward gives the Mavericks another young piece to develop as the franchise continues building for the future.
Throughout his college career, Johnson earned a reputation as a relentless defender capable of impacting games on both ends of the floor. His ability to finish around the basket, crash the boards and defend multiple positions made him one of the top prospects available in this year’s draft class.
The selection adds size and versatility to a Mavericks roster looking to strengthen its frontcourt rotation. Johnson’s athleticism and defensive instincts could allow him to contribute early while continuing to expand his offensive game at the NBA level.
Dallas entered draft night with several roster needs and chose to address toughness and interior presence by bringing in one of college basketball’s most productive young forwards.
Johnson becomes the newest member of the Mavericks organization as Dallas looks to take another step forward in the Western Conference heading into the 2026-27 season.
