DALLAS — The NBA confirmed Monday what had become increasingly clear over the course of the season: Cooper Flagg is the league’s top rookie.
The Dallas Mavericks forward/guard was named the 2025–26 Kia NBA Rookie of the Year, capping a debut campaign defined by versatility, poise and an impact that stretched well beyond the stat sheet.
Flagg, just 19 years and 112 days old at the close of the regular season, becomes one of the youngest recipients of the award in league history — second only to LeBron James, who earned the honor at 19 years, 106 days. The milestone underscores the rapid rise of a player who handled the spotlight in Dallas with uncommon composure.
His selection places him in rare company within the franchise. Flagg is only the third Maverick to be recognized as the league’s top rookie, joining Hall of Fame guard Jason Kidd (1994–95) and perennial All-Star Luka Dončić (2018–19). Both predecessors went on to shape eras of Mavericks basketball — a trajectory Flagg now appears poised to follow.
Throughout the season, Flagg’s all-around game — blending scoring instincts, defensive awareness and playmaking ability — made him a central figure in Dallas’ rotation. Coaches and teammates consistently pointed to his maturity and adaptability as defining traits in a year that saw him transition seamlessly to the professional level.
The honor adds another chapter to a growing résumé and offers a glimpse at what could be ahead for both Flagg and a Mavericks team continuing to build around its emerging core.
