FRISC, Texas — FC Dallas’ strong run at Toyota Stadium came to an end Wednesday night with a 2-0 loss to the Columbus Crew in the Pioneer Cup.
Dallas had its chances early, but Columbus weathered the pressure, scored first and took control of the match. The defeat ended FC Dallas’ streak of four straight home shutouts, matching a club record, and marked its first home loss in 168 days.
Head coach Eric Quill said Dallas started well but failed to handle the moment that led to Columbus’ opening goal.
The turning point came after FC Dallas won the ball near Columbus’ goal. Instead of capitalizing on the opportunity, Dallas allowed the Crew to recover possession and launch a counterattack that caught the home side out of position.
“We were a little naive, in my opinion,” Quill said, reflecting on the play.
After taking the lead, Columbus began to dictate the pace with its possession game. Dallas struggled to maintain its defensive shape, with Quill saying his players were pressing in separate groups instead of working together to win the ball back.
The coach also pointed to missed opportunities on set pieces, where Dallas hoped to use its size to create problems for Columbus.
Quill didn’t hide his disappointment with the performance, particularly the team’s inability to respond after falling behind. He said Dallas looked unsettled once the Crew took control, a departure from the resilience the team had shown throughout the season.
Columbus entered the match fighting for its playoff life, and Quill felt Dallas needed to match that urgency.
The loss comes with the postseason approaching, but Quill believes his team can respond. He challenged the players to learn from the defeat and return to the field with the same determination that helped them establish their home record.
Anderson Julio also returned to action for the first time since Aug. 5, giving Dallas a boost as it heads into the final stretch of the regular season.
FC Dallas now turns its attention to Sporting Kansas City. The teams meet Saturday, Oct. 31, with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m. CT on Apple TV.
Dallas still has work to do before the playoffs, and Saturday’s match offers an immediate opportunity to put Wednesday’s disappointment behind it.
