What We Learned at Cowboys Minicamp: Pickens Ready for Camp, Coordinators Trading Moves Like a Chess Match

FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys wrapped up mandatory minicamp this week, closing the book on the offseason program and shifting their focus toward training camp in Oxnard, California, later next month.

While the three-day minicamp offered only a glimpse of what the 2026 season could bring, several storylines emerged as the team prepares for the next phase of its offseason work.

One of the biggest developments involved wide receiver George Pickens. The newly acquired pass catcher made his first appearance with the team during the offseason program and indicated he has no plans to stage a hold-in when training camp begins. His participation provided an early look at how he could fit into Dallas’ evolving offensive attack alongside quarterback Dak Prescott and fellow playmakers.

On the coaching side, offensive coordinator Clayton Adams and defensive coordinator Chris Parker appeared to embrace the competitive nature of offseason practices. Adams described the daily battles as a strategic contest, comparing the back-and-forth adjustments between offense and defense to a chess match.

Parker, meanwhile, revealed a unique twist to his defensive system, noting that some of his play calls are inspired by insects. The unconventional naming approach added a lighter moment to the week while highlighting the creativity being brought into the defensive meeting rooms.

Away from the practice field, Prescott is also preparing for a busy offseason calendar. The Cowboys quarterback is expected to attend tight end Jake Ferguson’s upcoming wedding before the team reconvenes for training camp.

With minicamp complete, the Cowboys now enter the final stretch of the offseason. The next major checkpoint arrives in late July when players report to Oxnard, where roster battles, position competitions and preparations for the regular season will begin in earnest.

For Dallas, the foundation has been laid. The real work starts when training camp opens in California.
