FRISCO, Texas — Dallas Cowboys rookie safety Caleb Downs is taking a measured approach to his first NFL offseason, focusing on growth, preparation and learning from the veterans around him during organized team activities.
Downs described the transition to the professional level as a valuable learning experience, saying the early stages of OTAs have helped him adjust to the team’s practice routines, expectations and culture.
One of the biggest benefits has been working alongside veteran safeties such as P.J. Locke and J.T. Woods. Downs said he has made it a priority to absorb as much knowledge as possible from players who have already established themselves in the league.
“They all have different experiences,” Downs said. “I try to take pieces from each of them and build my understanding of the NFL.”
The rookie has seen time at multiple safety spots and welcomes the challenge of handling a larger workload. Downs believes understanding responsibilities across the defense helps him see the bigger picture and improves his ability to anticipate plays.
His commitment to preparation has also stood out. Downs said studying film and putting in extra work has been a constant throughout his football career and remains a key part of his daily routine.
Practicing against quarterback Dak Prescott and the Cowboys’ offense has provided another accelerated learning opportunity. Downs called the experience a blessing, noting the variety of talent he faces each day helps sharpen his development.
Prescott’s experience and ability to diagnose defenses before the snap have presented unique challenges, but Downs remains focused on executing his assignments.
Special teams could also play a role in his early NFL contributions. Downs said he has embraced learning new responsibilities and has leaned on advice from experienced players who built successful careers through special teams excellence.
Among the lessons he’s carried with him, one message has stood above the rest: keep the main thing the main thing. It’s advice he says both veteran teammates and his father have consistently reinforced.
Away from football, Downs recently spent time on the golf course with teammates and veterans, using the opportunity to build relationships while still picking up insights from experienced players.
As minicamp approaches, Downs remains focused on learning, competing and continuing to earn trust within the Cowboys’ defense.
