OXNARD, Calif. — Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker believes the foundation of his defense is being built through communication, versatility and physical play as training camp continues in Oxnard.
Parker said the competition to wear the green-dot helmet remains open, with multiple linebackers rotating through the role while coaches evaluate different combinations.
“We’re still working through different combinations,” Parker said. “Everybody has the communicator in their helmet right now.”
The Cowboys are also cross-training linebackers at multiple positions, a reflection of today’s NFL offenses that rely heavily on motion and pre-snap movement.
“Where you start isn’t always where you finish the play,” Parker said. “We want those guys getting as much exposure as possible.”
Parker said Dallas’ upcoming joint practices against the Los Angeles Rams will provide an early measuring stick for the defense, particularly against Sean McVay’s motion-heavy offense led by veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford.
He also praised the development of several young defenders, saying rookies are progressing by learning the mental side of the game while continuing to play fast and physical.
Communication has become a defining part of Parker’s defensive philosophy. Players are expected to communicate loudly in meetings just as they would on the field.
“If you walked into our meeting room, you’d probably think something was wrong because it’s so loud,” Parker said. “That’s exactly what we want.”
Parker credited the Cowboys’ defensive coaching staff for helping accelerate the installation of the new system and said the group has remained on schedule throughout camp.
“Our planning has allowed us to stay ahead,” Parker said. “Now it’s about continuing to improve every day.”
