OXNARD, Calif. — As the Cowboys move closer to the preseason, head coach Brian Schottenheimer said roster evaluations remain ongoing, both externally and within the team, while emphasizing that several starting jobs are still up for grabs.
Schottenheimer also provided a health update, saying Jonathan Bullard and Devin Moore did not practice, while several others were limited as Dallas continues to manage players through training camp.
The head coach clarified that Tyler Guyton has not officially been named the Cowboys’ starting left tackle. Schottenheimer said Nate Thomas must continue earning opportunities through consistent play, while the coaching staff continues evaluating players during practices that aren’t always open to the media.
Schottenheimer praised first-year defensive coordinator Christian Parker for creating a communication-driven culture, highlighting both verbal and nonverbal communication as key components of the defense. He added that the team’s work with military leadership groups reinforces those same principles of teamwork, accountability and attention to detail.
Competition also continues at wide receiver, where veterans such as Denzel Mims, Jalen Brooks and Tyler Johnson are expected to receive more opportunities. Schottenheimer said size has become increasingly valuable as NFL defenses grow bigger and more physical.
Schottenheimer said he’s pleased with the physicality of camp, noting the Cowboys have practiced aggressively while keeping players off the ground to prioritize safety. He also singled out defensive tackle Tito Ogbonnia as one of camp’s early standouts and said the team’s rookie defenders are earning opportunities with their strong performances.
He also commended All-Pro guard Tyler Smith for his relentless work ethic but noted the veteran still has room to refine his fundamentals. Looking ahead to the preseason, Schottenheimer said Dallas plans to keep portions of Christian Parker’s new defensive scheme under wraps while continuing to evaluate a roster that remains highly competitive.
