DALLAS — A historic night from rookie Cooper Flagg wasn’t enough to overcome a red-hot shooting performance by the Orlando Magic, who pulled away late for a 138-127 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night at American Airlines Center.
Dallas (24-53) matched the offensive firepower early and finished with 127 points — the club’s 15th game this season reaching at least 125, tying a mark last achieved during the 2019-20 campaign. But Orlando (41-36) proved too efficient, shooting 56% from the field in one of its most complete offensive outings of the season.
The night belonged to Flagg, who delivered a performance rarely seen from a first-year player. The teenage guard erupted for a career-high 51 points on 19-of-30 shooting, knocking down six 3-pointers and converting all seven of his free throws. He added six rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block, becoming the only rookie in league history to post that combination of numbers in a single game since steals and blocks were officially tracked.
Flagg is now one of the few rookies in NBA history to reach the 50-point mark, joining names like Allen Iverson and Brandon Jennings. His scoring surge also places him alongside Michael Jordan as one of the only rookies in the modern era to record multiple 45-point performances. He has now logged three games of 40 or more points this season — a benchmark no other rookie has reached this year.
Within franchise history, Flagg’s stat line echoed a rare feat previously accomplished by Luka Dončić, making them the only Mavericks to produce such an all-around performance in a single game. Flagg also became just the fifth player in team history to score 50 points in a contest.
Despite the breakout night, Dallas struggled to slow Orlando’s balanced attack. Wendell Carter Jr. led the way with 28 points and six rebounds, while Desmond Bane added 27 points, seven rebounds and five assists, continuing his trend of all-around performances in wins.
The Mavericks received additional support from Brandon Williams, who finished with 23 points and five assists, marking one of his strongest outings of the season. Klay Thompson contributed 18 points and four 3-pointers, continuing his steady production off the bench as he inches closer to another milestone shooting season.
Orlando’s 138 points marked one of the highest-scoring games in franchise history, fueled by consistent ball movement and efficient shot selection throughout the night.
Dallas kept pace for much of the game behind Flagg’s shot-making, but the Magic created separation in the fourth quarter, capitalizing on defensive lapses and maintaining their shooting rhythm down the stretch.
For the Mavericks, the loss overshadowed what will be remembered as a signature performance from their rookie — one that further cements Flagg as one of the league’s brightest young stars, even in a rebuilding season.
