FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys are bringing quarterback Joe Milton III back into the fold, signing him to the practice squad after he cleared waivers.
Milton was waived Monday when Dallas needed a roster spot after claiming running back Emari Demercado off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs. The move came after the Cowboys awarded the backup quarterback job to Sam Howell behind Dak Prescott.
The Cowboys had made it clear they wanted to keep Milton in the organization if he became available. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer and executive vice president Stephen Jones both expressed interest in bringing him back as the team’s third quarterback.
Milton, who arrived in Dallas in a 2025 trade with New England, turned in a strong preseason. He completed 29 of 43 passes for 378 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in three games, while adding 14 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown.
The return gives Dallas an intriguing developmental option behind Prescott and Howell while allowing Milton to continue working in an offense he has now been part of for more than a year.
For now, the Cowboys’ quarterback pecking order remains Dak Prescott, Sam Howell and Joe Milton.
