Pickens Returns to Cowboys Minicamp with Eyes on Winning, Not Contract Talks

FRISCO, Texas — George Pickens arrived at Dallas Cowboys minicamp Tuesday with a simple message: football comes first.

Making his first appearance during the team’s mandatory offseason work, the talented wide receiver said his focus remains on building chemistry with teammates and helping Dallas chase its ultimate goal rather than dwelling on contract discussions.

“It feels good,” Pickens said. “Every time you come into a building, it’s a different group of guys. It was fun seeing everybody again.”

Pickens, who is set to play under the franchise tag, dismissed speculation surrounding his attendance and future. While contract questions dominated portions of his media session, the receiver repeatedly steered the conversation back toward team goals and preparation for the upcoming season.

“When they presented the franchise tag, I signed it,” Pickens said. “I’m here to make the best decision for the team.”

The former Pittsburgh standout made it clear he never intended to miss mandatory minicamp and said staying connected with teammates throughout the offseason played a major role in his decision to report.

“I talk to Dak. I stay around the guys,” Pickens said. “That definitely makes you want to be here.”

Pickens is coming off a productive first season in Dallas, one that elevated expectations and fueled speculation about a long-term extension. Still, he insists he is not driven by proving himself to management or securing a bigger payday.

“I already knew what I could do,” Pickens said. “Last year just showed a lot of other people. My mindset doesn’t change. I’m going to do my best every year.”

Instead of focusing on negotiations, Pickens said his primary motivation remains helping the Cowboys reach heights the franchise has not experienced in decades.

“What’s important to me is winning,” he said. “I want to bring a Super Bowl to a group of guys that hasn’t had that feeling.”

The receiver also expressed confidence that Dallas’ offense could become one of the league’s most explosive units. With multiple playmakers on the field and offensive coordinator Clayton Adams looking to expand the scheme, Pickens believes opposing defenses will face difficult decisions.

“When you have multiple No. 1-type receivers, a good running back and a good offensive line, defenses have to account for a lot,” Pickens said. “That opens things up.”

One area that could help create those mismatches is increased versatility. Pickens said he is excited about moving around the formation, including more opportunities to line up in the slot.

“Super excited,” he said. “Moving guys around opens up a lot of different things.”

He also praised quarterback Dak Prescott and fellow receiver CeeDee Lamb, describing Lamb as a relentless worker whose drive to improve mirrors his own approach.

“Every year he wants to get better,” Pickens said. “That’s definitely something I respect.”

As minicamp continues and training camp in Oxnard approaches next month, Pickens said his plans are straightforward.

“Just keep working,” he said. “That’s what I’ve been doing all offseason.”

For now, questions about contracts, negotiations and future commitments can wait. Pickens has made it clear his attention is fixed on the season ahead — and on helping Dallas pursue a championship.
