Mike McCarthy Prepping Team for “Full Training Camp” and Confident Dak Deal “Will Work Out”

FRISCO, TEXAS — In these unprecedented times with the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a lot of uncertainty regarding the NFL offseason. Team facilities have reopened but only at 50% capacity and that does not include members of a team’s coaching staff or players. Organized Team Activities (OTA’s) and minicamps are prohibited, continuing in a virtual offseason program. One of the question marks looming is training camp.

Mike McCarthy spoke with the local Dallas media and explained that he is preparing the team for a “full training camp.”

He noted, “we are also planning for a training camp in Oxnard and for a training camp in Frisco. We’ve spent an enormous amount of time in the planning phase because you know it’s our first camp together so we are just trying to be ready for when the NFL and when those big decisions are made; that we are not running around trying to adhere to a different schedule. We have spent a ton of time in our preparation to be ready for that moment when we get together with our players.”

He is focusing on things that are in his control. From Green Bay with his family, McCarthy is getting rookies acquainted with veterans and the adjustment to the pro level, along with assisting players in the teaching and understanding of the new schemes they will be playing in 2020.

One thing McCarthy is not worried about, the future of Dak Prescott.

“ He’s involved in a business situation, “ McCarthy commented on Dak. “ I have full confidence that he’ll be ready to go. There has been communication. This is the way these business situations go sometimes and [I] respect that and I have all the confidence that it will work out.”

The Cowboys chose to franchise tag Dak that would give him $31.4 million in 2020 but he has not signed the tag. The two sides are at an impasse and have until the July 15th deadline to work out a long-term contract extension for the club’s franchise QB. It is unusual in the league for a contract negotiation to have lasted this long for a team’s starting quarterback but Dallas is working on a top-of-the-market deal and the coaching staff and front office are adamant it will get done.
