FRISCO, Texas – The Dallas Cowboys signed S Darian Thompson from Arizona’s practice squad on Wednesday. Thompson played college at Boise State and was drafted by the New York Giants in the third round 71st overall in the 2016 NFL Draft. He played two years for the Giants totaling seven tackles and one assist in two game starts in 2016, and 61 tackles and 14 assists in 16 game starts during the 2017 season. At Boise State, he was a 2X All-Mountain West Recipient (2014-15). He was ranked as the third best free safety prospect in the Draft by DraftScout.com and fifth best defensive back by Sports Illustrated. He racked up incredible interception numbers with 19, becoming the all-time leader at Boise State in 2014.
Thompson dealt with a foot injury and was waived by the Giants in 2018 as part of final roster cuts. He has a great eye for placement in defensive schemes and disrupts receivers as they high point the football. Thompson was a solid last line of defense instinctively choosing the correct lanes stopping running backs on the carry. He will be an option for the Cowboys who have been thinner at the safety position this season due to Xavier Wood’s injury.
The Cowboys also signed CB C.J. Goodwin from Cincinnati’s practice squad and they also acquired RB Darius Jackson to the practice squad.
