PITTSBURGH, PA — The Dallas Stars rallied late to force overtime but could not finish the comeback, falling 2-1 to the Pittsburgh Penguins in a shootout Saturday night at PPG Paints Arena.
After two scoreless periods, Pittsburgh broke through when Connor Dewar scored early in the third to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead.
Dallas answered with 30 seconds remaining in regulation. Thomas Seguin redirected a pass from Jason Robertson past Pittsburgh goaltender Arturs Silovs to even the score at 1-1 and send the game into overtime.
Neither team found the net in the extra period, setting up a shootout to decide the outcome.
Pittsburgh converted three shootout attempts, while Dallas managed two. Ben Kindel, Sidney Crosby and Rickard Rakell scored for the Penguins, while Seguin and Wyatt Johnston converted for the Stars.
Silovs stopped 24 of 25 shots in regulation to help Pittsburgh secure the victory. Dallas goaltender Jake Oettinger turned aside the Penguins’ chances through the first two periods before Dewar ended his shutout bid.
The Stars went 0-for-3 on the power play but successfully killed all five Pittsburgh opportunities.
Dallas returns home Tuesday to face the Colorado Avalanche as it looks to rebound from the shootout loss.
