DALLAS — Kyrie Irving is back with the Dallas Mavericks, and this comeback means more than simply returning to the basketball court.
After missing the entire 2025-26 NBA season while recovering from a torn ACL in his left knee, Irving is preparing for his return with a different perspective.
The injury happened on March 3, 2025, and ended his season. Irving then spent more than a year away from NBA game action. Now, the veteran guard is preparing for the 2026-27 NBA season and his 16th year in the league.
Kyrie Irving Takes a Different Approach
At 34, Irving understands that his comeback will require patience.
The Mavericks guard said communication with the team’s medical staff will remain important. That includes conversations about his workload and how his body responds during demanding stretches of the schedule.
Back-to-back games will be part of that discussion.
Still, the physical side of recovery is only one piece of the story.
Irving also talked about the mental challenge of returning from a serious injury. Questions about whether he would be the same player were part of that process.
“I think this summer gave me a lot of time to reflect,” Irving said.
That time away allowed Irving to look at his career from a different angle.
He said the injury gave him an opportunity to step away from the constant demands of basketball. It also allowed him to think about his future and the type of leader he wants to become.
Irving Embraces Leadership Role
The Dallas Mavericks have several new faces entering the 2026-27 season.
That makes Irving’s experience even more important.
He said he wants to communicate better, show more vulnerability and become a stronger leader for his teammates.
“I’m finally 34 years old and going on Year 16,” Irving said.
Irving also accepted responsibility for his part in the Mavericks falling short of their goals before his injury.
The veteran guard said the time away helped him think about where he wants to be as both a basketball player and a person.
That could make his role different when he returns.
Instead of simply being one of Dallas’ top offensive weapons, Kyrie Irving will also be expected to provide veteran leadership to a changing Mavericks roster.
A New-Look Mavericks Team
Dallas enters the new season with a different look and a new coaching staff led by Dusty May. Cooper Flagg remains a major part of the team’s future, while Irving provides veteran experience alongside a younger core.
The Mavericks also have several players with limited NBA experience.
Irving said he believes the organization has a strong foundation. He also expressed confidence in his teammates, coaches, medical staff and front office.
For a player who has experienced the highs and lows of a long NBA career, that perspective could be valuable inside the locker room.
The Competitive Fire Remains
One thing has not changed.
Irving still expects to compete.
He said teammates and coaches can count on him to give his best effort while putting the Mavericks’ mission first.
The NBA has already highlighted Irving among the league’s major comeback stories for the 2026-27 season. He has also been participating in pickup games as he continues preparing for his return.
The Mavericks’ regular-season opener is scheduled for Oct. 21 against the Houston Rockets.
For Dallas, Kyrie Irving’s return represents more than the return of a nine-time All-Star.
It gives the Mavericks an experienced scorer, playmaker and veteran voice as the franchise begins a new chapter.
After a long road back, Irving appears ready for whatever comes next.
