ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers closed the unofficial first half of the season with another statement win Friday night, using a four-run eighth inning to pull away from the Houston Astros for a 7-3 victory at Globe Life Field.
The comeback win gave Texas its second straight victory and strengthened its grip atop the American League West. After Seattle fell to Tampa Bay, the Rangers extended their division lead to 1½ games, matching their largest advantage of the season.
Texas broke open a 3-3 game in the eighth when Wyatt Langford delivered a go-ahead solo home run before Jake Burger capped the rally with a towering three-run blast into the Astros’ bullpen.
Langford has now produced the decisive hit in consecutive games. His eighth-inning homer marked his second career go-ahead home run in the eighth inning or later, continuing his strong production in late-game situations.
Burger finished with four RBIs, matching his season high. He drove in Texas’ first run with a groundout in the opening inning before delivering his team-leading 16th home run of the season. He also increased his club-best RBI total to 58.
Joc Pederson continued his hot stretch at the plate with a solo homer in the fourth inning, his 15th of the season. Six of those home runs have come over his last 13 games, making him one of the American League’s hottest power hitters entering the All-Star break.
Brandon Nimmo also contributed offensively, lining an RBI double off the left-field wall in the first inning to help stake Texas to an early lead.
Starter Cal Quantrill turned in his strongest outing since joining the Rangers’ rotation, allowing just one earned run over six innings. He scattered five hits, walked one and threw a season-high 79 pitches while recording his first quality start of the year. Since moving into the starting rotation on June 23, Quantrill owns a 2.12 ERA across four starts.
Houston battled back with solo home runs from Yordan Alvarez and Yainer Diaz in the sixth inning before taking a brief 3-2 lead in the seventh.
Alvarez’s blast was historic, as the slugger reached the 200-home run milestone in just 771 career games, becoming the fastest player in Astros history to accomplish the feat and one of the quickest in Major League Baseball history. His 455-foot drive was also one of the longest home runs hit at Globe Life Field this season.
Houston starter Hunter Brown also turned in a quality start, allowing three earned runs over six innings while striking out four. However, he issued five walks, tying a career high, and left with the game tied before Texas erupted against the Astros’ bullpen.
Cole Winn earned the victory in relief, becoming the first Rangers reliever since 2022 to pick up wins in consecutive team games.
The victory also marked Texas’ fourth straight game with at least three home runs over its last two contests and improved the Rangers to 3-5 against Houston this season with five meetings still remaining in the Silver Boot Series.
