Cowboys Secure George Pickens on Franchise Tag, Shift Focus Beyond Deadline

FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys have officially locked in wide receiver George Pickens for the 2026 season, finalizing a one-year franchise tag valued at $27.3 million after negotiations on a long-term extension fell short.

Dallas confirmed the move Wednesday, ensuring Pickens remains a central piece of the offense heading into training camp. Despite ongoing dialogue in recent months, the two sides were unable to bridge the gap on a multi-year agreement before the offseason window narrowed.

With the franchise tag now signed, the organization made it clear there will be no further contract discussions leading up to the league’s July 15 deadline, in line with NFL rules governing tagged players.

Pickens, who emerged as a dynamic playmaker last season, gives the Cowboys continuity at the position while preserving flexibility for the future. The 25-year-old is coming off a breakout campaign that solidified his role as a go-to target in Dallas’ passing attack.

For now, both sides move forward with a short-term commitment—one that keeps a high-impact receiver in place, but leaves long-term questions lingering beyond the 2026 season.
