Wings Run Into A Storm

ARLINGTON, TX- Dallas was unable to secure the home win in Friday nights Commissioners Cup against Seattle Storm.

Arike Ogunbowale and Isabelle Harrison’s combined 42-point game wasn’t enough for the Wings to secure a win. Seattle conquered the Wing’s defense tonight as forward Breanna Stewart led her team with 32 points and 11 rebounds.

Storm started off the game on a 7- 0 run, leaving the Wings scrambling on the court. Dallas got the ball rolling after Allisha Grays’s 23-foot three-point jumper, but Seattle responded shortly with Sue Birds three-point jumper. The Wings went on a 7-0 run at the end of the 1st quarter but wasn’t enough to bypass the Storm. Wings trail 24-22.

The second quarter started slow for the Wings as their first point wasn’t made until three minutes in. Satou Sabally followed with a 26-foot three-point jumper assisted by Ty Harris. Dallas outscored Seattle by 1 point in the second, heading into half down 41-42 The Wings came out at the start of the third quarter guns blazing as all five players on the court made adjustments to get in the paint comfortably. Isabelle Harrisons had 10 points in the
quarter, four of them being from the line, while Breanna Stewart led Seattle in the third with 9 points. Seattle outscores Dallas by six, giving Storm a 66-59 lead.

The fourth quarter was a constant uphill battle for the Wings as they tried to shorten Seattle’s lead. Arike Ogunbowale rallied in the last 10 minutes of the game giving Dallas fans an exciting nail-biter. Being down by seven at the start of the quarter, the Wing’s offense handled the ball with ease and was able to take the lead with 5 minutes left in the game. The score juggled back and forth with Seattle leading and then Dallas leading, but ultimately it was Seattle that came out on top with the win.

Coach Vickie Johnson expressed her emotions on tonight’s game, “I can’t ask for anything else. The effort, I asked them to focus. Did we make some mistakes, yes we did?” When asked how will her team be ready for Sunday she replied, “We watch film and we move on.

Dallas will be back here at the College Park Center, Sunday June 12th at 3 P.M CT in a rematch against Seattle Storm.
