FRISCO, Texas — Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer believes newly acquired cornerback Joey Porter Jr. can provide an immediate boost to the defense.
Schottenheimer praised Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones and Will McClay for being aggressive in adding talent, while highlighting Porter’s size, length and physicality.
“We love the physicality that he brings, both as a coverage piece, but also as a guy that can fill runs and tackle.”
Porter dealt with back issues in Pittsburgh, but Schottenheimer said he looked good during his first practice with Dallas.
“He moved around good today. We’d like him to play, but we’ll see how the week goes.”
The Cowboys are dealing with injuries in the secondary, but Schottenheimer said Porter’s addition is about more than simply filling a need.
“He’s a young corner that’s got elite coverage skills.”
Schottenheimer also believes Porter’s coverage ability can help the pass rush by giving the defense more opportunities to disrupt the quarterback’s timing.
The Cowboys have a specific plan for Porter if he plays against Houston, although Schottenheimer said he likely won’t take every defensive snap.
“If he plays, we’ll certainly have a good package for him.”
After arriving in Dallas Thursday morning, Porter passed his physical and participated in practice. Schottenheimer called his first day a “positive” one as the Cowboys prepare for Houston.
