Stars Get Healthier as Gulutzan Fine-Tunes Team During Short Camp

FRISCO, Texas — — The Dallas Stars are getting healthier as they work through a shortened training camp, with several players nearing a return while coach Glen Gulutzan continues to sharpen the team’s systems.

Jake Oettinger was evaluated after an issue earlier in camp and is expected to miss only a day or two, Gulutzan said Thursday.

The Stars also received encouraging updates on several other players. Dutchy skated Thursday and is expected to participate in Friday’s morning skate, though he will not play in the preseason game. Blackwell returned to a full practice and could be another day or two away from game action.

Tyler Seguin was held out of Thursday’s practice as part of a planned day off for his knee. Gulutzan said Seguin is expected back on the ice Friday and could play.

With the roster gradually getting healthier, Dallas is also using practice data to manage workloads. The coaching staff works with its strength and conditioning group to monitor skating intensity and energy expenditure, helping determine when players need additional recovery.

“We’re trying to build tolerance,” Gulutzan said, particularly around the groins and hips, with the goal of preparing players for the physical demands that accumulate during the season.

The Stars are also being deliberate with their tactical adjustments.

Rather than overhaul their system, Gulutzan said Dallas is emphasizing a smaller number of changes so players can absorb them quickly and play with greater instinct.

The approach appears to be taking hold. Gulutzan said the players have responded positively to the changes, while the coaching staff continues to address smaller mistakes during practices.

“We’ve got a lot of intelligent players,” Gulutzan said.

Dallas will continue its preseason schedule Friday, with Casey expected to play most of the game and Remo serving as the backup.

For now, the Stars are focused on getting players healthy, managing workloads and making sure their adjustments become second nature before the regular season begins.
