SMU Opens 2026 Fall Camp With CFP Aspirations and High Expectations

DALLAS — Expectations around SMU football have reached a new level entering the 2026 season.

The Mustangs begin the year ranked No. 20 in the preseason Coaches Poll after last season’s success, bringing increased attention to a team that believes it can contend on the national stage.

Quarterback Kevin Jennings headlines the optimism. After emerging as one of the ACC’s top playmakers a year ago, Jennings enters the season as a player drawing early Heisman Trophy discussion. He won’t be carrying the offense alone, however. SMU returns seven offensive starters, providing continuity and experience for a unit expected to remain one of the conference’s most productive.

Jennings played in 13 games last season, completing 300 of 454 passes (66.1%) for 3,641 yards with 26 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He also added four rushing touchdowns, giving the Mustangs a proven dual-threat leader entering 2026.

While the offense returns much of its core, the defense will feature a different look, particularly in the secondary. Despite those changes, there is confidence within the program, especially at linebacker, where experience provides stability heading into the season.

Defensive coordinator Scott Symons and the coaching staff believe that veteran presence will help the unit develop quickly as new faces step into larger roles.

SMU’s goals are clear entering fall camp. The Mustangs are focused on earning a spot in the College Football Playoff and competing for an ACC championship as they prepare for the season opener against Florida State on Sept. 7.

With an experienced quarterback, a veteran offense and championship aspirations, SMU enters fall camp carrying some of the highest expectations the program has seen in recent years.
