FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Training camp often creates new opportunities. For Dallas Cowboys running back Jaydon Blue, this summer could be the start of something bigger.
Javonte Williams enters camp as the clear starter after rushing for 1,201 yards last season. However, the competition behind him remains open. Blue plans to make his case for a larger role.
A Fresh Start for Year Two
The second-year running back enters camp with confidence. After all, he has a full NFL season behind him. He also understands the speed and demands of the league much better.
Blue’s rookie numbers were modest. He finished with 38 carries for 129 yards and one touchdown. Still, those numbers do not tell the full story. Dallas viewed last season as an opportunity for him to learn and grow.
Speed Gives Blue an Edge
Blue’s biggest strength is his explosiveness. He has the speed to reach the outside and the quickness to make defenders miss. In addition, he can catch passes out of the backfield. That versatility fits well in Brian Schottenheimer’s offense.
The Cowboys also value players who can create big plays. As a result, Blue has a chance to become an effective change-of-pace back if he earns the coaching staff’s trust.
Training Camp Will Be the Test
Talent alone will not earn playing time. Blue must improve in pass protection and ball security. Coaches also want to see consistency every day.
Meanwhile, every preseason game will matter. Every practice rep is another chance to impress. Young players often earn roles during training camp, not after the regular season begins.
Opportunity Is There
Williams remains the clear starter. Even so, Dallas knows it needs more than one productive running back. A 17-game season demands quality depth.
Blue’s skill set complements Williams. Williams brings power between the tackles. Blue adds speed and big-play potential. Therefore, the Cowboys could benefit from using both backs throughout the season.
Ultimately, Blue controls his own future. If he continues building on his offseason progress, he could become one of Dallas’ biggest surprises in 2026.
For Blue, the mission is simple. Earn the coaches’ trust. Earn more carries. Help the Cowboys build a more balanced offense. If that happens, Dallas may already have another weapon waiting in its backfield.
