MACAO, China — The Dallas Mavericks responded to their preseason-opening loss with a 132-115 victory over the Houston Rockets on Sunday at Venetian Arena, earning a split in the teams’ two-game NBA China series.
Dallas found its offensive rhythm after falling to Houston 135-117 in Friday’s opener. The Mavericks used a balanced scoring attack and increased defensive pressure to reverse the result in the rematch.
Kyrie Irving’s return to game action provided another significant storyline for Dallas. The veteran guard, who missed the entire 2025-26 season while recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, finished with 17 points and three assists in his first game in more than 19 months.
Cooper Flagg also contributed across the floor, recording 14 points and seven assists as Dallas continued preparing for the 2026-27 regular season.
The Mavericks’ ability to force turnovers and generate opportunities in transition helped them regain control after Houston briefly moved in front during the third quarter. Dallas carried a 95-85 advantage into the final period and maintained its lead down the stretch.
Dallas made 15 of 40 attempts from 3-point range, connecting at a 37.5% clip. The improved perimeter shooting offered an encouraging sign as the team continues adjusting to first-year coach Dusty May.
Although the result came in preseason play, the victory gave Dallas momentum heading toward the start of the regular season. The Mavericks and Rockets are scheduled to meet again Oct. 21 in Houston when both teams open their regular-season campaigns.
