FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys are adding another experienced piece to their secondary.
Dallas has agreed to acquire cornerback Joey Porter Jr. from the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to the Cowboys and multiple reports Wednesday night. The move gives Dallas another proven option at cornerback as injuries have tested the depth of the position early in the season.
The Cowboys will send Pittsburgh a 2028 second-round draft pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick for Porter, according to NFL Network and ESPN reporting.
Porter, 26, was selected by Pittsburgh in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Penn State. He has started 41 of his 47 career games, recording 164 tackles, 31 passes defended and three interceptions during his three seasons with the Steelers.
The timing of the move is significant for Dallas. Cornerbacks Cobie Durant and Shavon Revel have dealt with injuries early in the season, leaving the Cowboys looking for additional help in the secondary. Dallas now adds Porter to a group that includes DaRon Bland.
Porter is also entering the final year of his rookie contract. He and Pittsburgh were unable to reach an agreement on a contract extension during the offseason, and the Steelers had previously stopped negotiating once the regular season began.
The Cowboys’ move continues an increasingly active trade relationship with Pittsburgh. Dallas previously acquired wide receiver George Pickens from the Steelers in 2025 and later traded for offensive tackle Broderick Jones this offseason.
For Dallas, Porter provides another established cornerback and potentially a significant addition to a defense that has already been forced to adjust because of injuries.
The immediate question now is when Porter will be ready to take the field for his new team.
