TCU Hosts Cal This Saturday Afternoon In Fort Worth

FORT WORTH, TX — The TCU Horned Frogs (1-0) will face off the Cal Golden Bears (0-2) this Saturday afternoon at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth. These two teams haven’t played each other since the Cheez-It Bowl in 2018.

The Horned Frogs did not see much competition in their first matchup of the season last Saturday, defeating Duquesne 45-3. The Dukes requested 12-minute quarters for the third and fourth quarter after having many players leave the game due to injury, one of them being their starting quarterback, Joe Mischler.

TCU’s offense was steller. The Frogs scored six touchdowns and had 253 passing yards and 178 rushing yards, totaling 431 total offensive yards. Max Duggan, TCU’s starting quarterback, did not see the field in the second half. He completed 14 of 19 passes, totaling 207 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

All eyes were on TCU’s defense for the start of the season and they did not disappoint. The Frogs held Duquesne to a field goal and 137 total yards of offense for the entire game.

TCU will be challenged more in this matchup than they were against the Dukes. The Golden Bears are a solid Power 5 opponent and their defense leads their team.

“We need to work on our offense for Cal’s defense on Saturday. They have a great defense and we need to be ready for that.”, Head Coach Gary Patterson said that his team had a great game on Saturday but they will have a harder opponent coming into town this week and they bring a great defense with them.

The Golden Bears took their first loss of the season to Nevada in week 1. What started off as a hot 14-0 lead after their first two possessions ended in a 22-17 loss. Chase Garbers, Cal’s starting quarterback, completed 25 of 38 passes and threw for 177 yards.

The Golden Bears are known for their defense but they will need to kick their offense into gear if they want to have a chance against a TCU team that is a threat on both sides of the ball.

Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. CST and is scheduled to be aired on ESPNU.
