Injury Updates: Prognosis of DT Neville Gallimore (dislocated elbow), TE Sean McKeon (ankle sprain)

FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys suffered a setback against the Arizona Cardinals. Defensive tackle Neville Gallimore sustained a dislocated left elbow in Friday night’s preseason loss and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks, according to multiple reports.

An MRI on Saturday in Dallas revealed Gallimore avoided any tears and minimal structural damage. Although the injury is not season-ending, losing the team’s projected starter at the three-technique spot is a major loss in Dan Quinn’s bolstered defense. He could end up missing three games of the regular season if the timeline extends to six. After seeing the agony on Gallimore’s face and a replay of the injury, the outcome could have been more severe. Encouraging news for Dallas.

Gallimore received increased reps midway through the 2020 season following injuries to both Gerald McCoy and Trysten Hill. He established himself as a key cog in the defense and has continued to impress both head coach Mike McCarthy and Quinn throughout the offseason program. The staff will likely evaluate their inhouse options for the remainder of the preseason and monitor where the numbers are in proportion to the final 53 and potentially explore options out-of-house if needed.

With the current depth, the Cowboys are not in a panic. Dallas has veterans Brent Urban, Carlos Watkins, Justin Hamilton and acquired Osa Odighizuwa and Quinton Bohanna in the draft. Gallimore’s absence is not going to accelerate Hill’s return. He is currently on the physically unable to perform list, still working his way back from a torn ACL suffered in Week 5 last season.

Once he does return, Gallimore will be a cornerstone in Quinn’s defensive front. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport was the first to report the update.

In addition, on Friday, tight end Sean McKeon suffered a right ankle sprain against Arizona. The staff will continue to monitor his day-to-day progression to determine an accurate timetable moving forward. Dallas will likely be able to have a better estimation when the inflammation goes down. Another loss for the Cowboys at the position group. Dalton Schultz is nursing an ankle sprain suffered during Wednesday’s practice. Blake Jarwin made his first official debut against the Cardinals since suffering a torn ACL in the 2020 Week 1 opener against the Rams. He is healthy and Dallas also has Jeremy Sprinkle, Nick Eubanks and Artayvious Lynn on the depth chart.
