Mavericks Luka Doncic Signs Rich 5 Yr $207 Million Extension

DALLAS, TEXAS – It’s no secret that the Mavericks have had plans to sign Luka Doncic to a long term extension, and both sides have officially come to an agreement to keep the former NBA Rookie of the Year and 2 time All-Star under contract until 2027.

To provide perspective, by signing this extension Luka has eclipsed the career earnings of Dwyane Wade, Allen Iverson, Vince Carter, and his new head coach Jason Kidd. Not only that, it’s the richest deal signed in franchise history.

The Slovenian native is excited about staying in Dallas and re-emphasized his commitment not only to the team but also to the city of Dallas and his own foundation.

“Today is a dream come true…. I am humbled and excited to remain in Dallas as part of the Mavericks. I am committed to the organization and appreciate the support of my fans. Along with this new contract I am increasing my efforts and focusing on expanding the Luka Doncic Foundation.”

Doncic has rooted himself in the Dallas community like Maverick legend Dirk Nowitzki did during his playing days. In November 2020 Luka bought a home in the suburban area of Preston Hollow which geographically is close to the Mavericks practice facilities and American Airlines Center. It was easy to presume after the purchase of his home that he would be in Dallas for the long haul, but nothing is guaranteed until ink meets the paper.

Now that the Mavericks have signed their star to an extension they can begin to put the final touches on their roster well before the season begins. Dallas has also made some moves in the trade market trading Josh Richardson who was an odd fit in the Mavericks rotation last season to the Celtics in exchange for 21 year old center Moses Brown. The Mavericks also re-signed Tim Hardaway Jr, Boban Marjonovic, Willie Cauley-Stein, and got stronger in the shooting department with the signing of Reggie Bullock from the New York Knicks.

Will these moves be enough for the Mavericks to best their record last season? No telling, but with Jason Kidd and Nico Harrison now being in the fold, this team will stretch what they can to put the proper pieces around their young superstar who will be 28 years old once this extension expires.

Not saying that this new group has time to make their superstar happy, but it does help that he is committed to the franchise for the next 7 years.
