Cowboys Hire Former Giants Coach Ben McAdoo As A Consultant

FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants are once again transferring coaches. Former Cowboys’ head coach Jason Garrett was hired by the Giants in 2020 to serve as the team’s offensive coordinator. Now the NFC East rivals have struck again. Dallas is hiring former Giants’ head coach Ben McAdoo as a consultant, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported on Wednesday.

The addition to the staff reunites Mike McCarthy and McAdoo in Dallas. The previous relationship and familiarity with McCarthy helped land him a role with the Silver and Blue. McAdoo served under McCarthy as a tight ends and quarterback’s coach in Green Bay from 2006 to 2013.

He was hired as the Giants’ offensive coordinator in 2014 and promoted to head coach two years later. As a first-year head coach with the Giants in 2016, McAdoo led New York to an 11-5 record and a playoff appearance. However, the promising start did not carryover. New York began the season 2-9 and after a plan was divulged to bench Eli Manning for Geno Smith, McAdoo was fired in 2017. McAdoo spent the 2020 season as the quarterback’s coach for the Jaguars. He lost the position after head coach Doug Marrone was let go.

Now, he will be another resource for McCarthy to draw from. Since Dak Prescott has already been through four quarterback coaches (Wade Wilson 2016-17, Kellen Moore 2018, Jon Kitna 2019, Doug Nussmeier 2020), and the ascension of Kellen Moore as the club’s play-caller, an opening at either seems unlikely.
