DALLAS, Texas — SMU returns to Gerald J. Ford Stadium on Saturday with a ranked matchup against Virginia, looking to build on its recent victory over Boston College and maintain its position among the nation’s top 25 teams.

The No. 24 Mustangs enter the nationally televised contest ranked 22nd in the US LBM Coaches Poll after defeating Boston College 25-16 on Oct. 3. SMU has remained in the Associated Press Top 25 every week since the preseason rankings were released in August, marking its longest such run since 1985.

Quarterback Kevin Jennings continues to lead an offense that has established multiple program records. The junior signal-caller has extended SMU’s records for passing yards, completions and total touchdowns responsible for, while compiling 23 victories as the team’s starting quarterback.

Jennings also ranks among the ACC’s active career leaders, entering the matchup with 9,297 passing yards and 9,925 total yards.

Virginia arrives in Dallas after earning a 28-25 victory over Syracuse on Oct. 10. The Cavaliers will face an SMU program that has established itself as one of the conference’s most successful teams since joining the ACC in 2024.

The Mustangs own a 16-3 record in ACC play during that span, the most conference victories by any team in the league over the same period. Since 2022, SMU has gone 29-6 against conference opponents, including a 20-game winning streak that stretched from 2022 through 2025.

Saturday’s matchup marks the second meeting between the programs. SMU won the first encounter, defeating Virginia 33-7 on the road in 2024.

Defense Sets the Tone

While Jennings and the offense have drawn attention, SMU’s defense has delivered consistent production, particularly when opponents reach third down.

The Mustangs have allowed conversions on just 18 of 70 third-down attempts this season, a 25.7% rate that leads the ACC and ranks fourth nationally.

SMU has also accumulated 141 sacks since the start of the 2023 season, the most among FBS programs during that stretch. Since 2024, the Mustangs have forced 55 turnovers, the highest total in the ACC over that period.

The defensive pressure could be a significant factor against a Virginia team coming off a narrow conference victory.

Ford Stadium Has Been a Scoring Ground

SMU’s home-field advantage has been accompanied by an explosive offensive output. Across its last 24 home games dating to November 2022, the Mustangs have scored 1,062 points, an average of 44.3 points per game.

SMU has posted a 22-2 record over that stretch, including victories against several Power Four opponents. The run features a 66-42 win over TCU in 2024, a 42-16 victory against Florida State and a 26-20 triumph over then-No. 10 Miami in 2025.

Under head coach Rhett Lashlee, the Mustangs have scored at least 40 points in 14 of 28 home games, winning 13 of those contests.

Lashlee has compiled a 29-6 record in conference games during his tenure, the best conference mark in program history. SMU is also 34-5 under Lashlee when scoring at least 30 points.

The offense has demonstrated its ability to spread the ball around, with at least seven receivers recording a catch in 45 of the team’s past 49 games.

A Chance to Keep the Momentum

SMU enters the Virginia game having won its most recent outing against Boston College, but the Mustangs will need another complete performance to protect their home record and continue their climb through the ACC schedule.

Jennings’ continued development, the defense’s ability to force third-down stops and SMU’s scoring production at Ford Stadium will be key storylines as the Mustangs pursue another victory.

With its national ranking intact and a strong record against conference competition, SMU has an opportunity to reinforce its standing against a Virginia team that has already shown it can compete in close games.
