FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys made a move to strengthen their offensive tackle depth Sunday, acquiring former Pittsburgh Steelers first-round pick Broderick Jones just ahead of the NFL’s 53-man roster deadline.
Dallas is sending its 2027 third- and sixth-round selections to Pittsburgh in exchange for Jones and a 2027 fourth-round pick. The Cowboys officially announced the trade Sunday after the agreement was reported Saturday night.
Jones, 25, was selected 14th overall by the Steelers in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Georgia. He started 38 of the 45 games he played during his three seasons in Pittsburgh, seeing time at both left and right tackle.
The move gives Dallas another experienced option for an offensive line that has remained a question throughout training camp and the preseason.
The Cowboys are counting on Tyler Guyton to continue developing at left tackle, while veteran Terence Steele has been working at right tackle. Behind them, Dallas has been looking for reliable depth and flexibility along the edges of the line.
Jones gives the Cowboys another former first-round talent to evaluate.
His time in Pittsburgh, however, did not develop as the Steelers originally envisioned. Jones suffered a neck injury late in the 2025 season that eventually required spinal fusion surgery, forcing him to miss the final six games. He returned in time for training camp this summer but struggled to regain his previous form during the preseason.
Pittsburgh declined Jones’ fifth-year option earlier this offseason and selected Arizona State offensive tackle Max Iheanachor in the first round of the 2026 draft, creating an increasingly crowded picture at tackle.
Now, Jones gets a fresh start in Dallas.
The Cowboys have also reunited Jones with former Steelers teammate George Pickens, whom Dallas acquired earlier this offseason.
For Dallas, the trade is less about guaranteeing Jones a starting job and more about adding competition at a position where depth could become critical over the course of a long season.
Jones will have an opportunity to establish himself in a new environment and potentially compete for a starting role or provide the Cowboys with valuable swing-tackle insurance.
With roster decisions coming down to the wire, Dallas clearly wasn’t willing to leave its offensive tackle situation to chance.
The Cowboys have added another former first-round pick to the equation. What they get from Jones could ultimately depend on how quickly he can regain his form and turn a change of scenery into a career reset.
