Joe Milton Embraces Growth, Competition and Patience

FRISCO, Texas — Joe Milton believes the biggest changes to his game haven’t just come from throwing the football. They have come from understanding himself better.

Entering his third NFL season, the Dallas Cowboys quarterback said his offseason work has helped him become more comfortable with his mechanics, decision-making and mindset.

Milton pointed specifically to his footwork and base as areas where he has made progress. When his feet are set properly, he said, he feels more capable of delivering the ball with accuracy and touch from different angles.

That improvement, Milton said, is the product of work that often happens away from the spotlight.

“What you do in the dark just comes to light,” Milton said, describing the preparation that has gone into his development.

Milton also has embraced the competition inside the Cowboys’ quarterback room. Rather than viewing the battle as simply a fight for a roster spot, he sees it as an opportunity to learn from the players around him while continuing to sharpen his own game.

For Milton, one of the biggest offseason goals was learning how to move on from mistakes.

He acknowledged that his passion for football can sometimes make it difficult to immediately flush a bad play. This year, he’s worked on not allowing a missed assignment, poor decision or mistake by a teammate to carry into the next snap.

That mindset has taken on added importance since becoming a father to a daughter.

Milton said fatherhood has helped him become more patient and less quick to react when things don’t go as planned.

“Just being able to know it’s life and know you’ve got to mess up,” Milton said. “You’ve got to make a mistake. Just move on to the next play.”

Milton also praised Cowboys wide receivers Jonathan Mingo and CeeDee Lamb for the work they’ve put in and their desire to build chemistry with the quarterbacks. He said both players regularly seek feedback during practices and want to understand how they can make plays when the ball comes their way.

He also spoke highly of rookie safety Caleb Downs, whom Milton has known since their college days. Milton called Downs physical and intelligent and pointed to his late interception as another example of the rookie’s instincts.

As the Cowboys continue preparing for the season, Milton’s focus appears to be less about outside expectations and more about controlling what he can — his preparation, his mechanics and his response to each opportunity.

For a quarterback entering Year 3, Milton believes that continued growth could be just as important as winning the competition itself.
