FRISCO, Texas — Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown is eager to get back on the field, saying his rehabilitation has progressed to include team drills as he works toward returning from injury.
Overshown said he has remained involved in the team’s preparation throughout his recovery, attending meetings and walkthroughs while continuing his rehabilitation. After spending weeks working toward a return, he said the opportunity to resume playing would be meaningful regardless of how quickly his role expands.
“I’m thankful that I’m still able to get to do what I love,” Overshown said.
The linebacker said he has participated in some team drills over the past several weeks. Although he acknowledged uncertainty about how his return would unfold, Overshown believes his presence could help the defense.
His potential return comes as Dallas continues working to improve its consistency, particularly when it comes to assignments, situational football and limiting mistakes.
Discipline remains the defensive priority
Overshown said the Cowboys have continued to identify areas for improvement through film study and weekly preparation. Opposing offenses adjust to what they see on tape, making it important for Dallas to correct its mistakes before they become recurring problems.
The defense has emphasized accountability and execution, with an emphasis on each player fulfilling his assignment rather than trying to make someone else’s play.
“It’s really just like not trying to do somebody else’s job,” Overshown said.
The approach sounds simple, but Overshown acknowledged that executing it consistently during games can be difficult. Defensive players want to make impact plays, generate highlights and change the outcome. Those opportunities, he said, are more likely to come when all 11 players execute their responsibilities.
Offenses often capitalize on explosive plays and defensive mistakes. Overshown said the Cowboys must do a better job of eliminating those opportunities and playing cleaner football.
Cowboys believe improvement is within reach
Overshown said the defense has shown on film what it can accomplish when it plays at its best, including generating pressure and getting opponents off the field. The challenge is maintaining that level of execution from week to week.
Situational football has been another point of emphasis as Dallas works through the season. Overshown said the unit has made progress in that area but understands that improvement must continue.
The linebacker described the team’s mindset as competitive rather than angry or frustrated. Players want better results, he said, and that requires taking responsibility for the details that can determine a game’s outcome.
Regardless of the team’s mood after a win or loss, Overshown said, results will not change unless the players take ownership of the work required to improve.
For Overshown, the immediate focus remains his recovery and getting back into action. For the Cowboys defense, the objective is to translate preparation into consistent execution on game day.
Both priorities could become increasingly important as Dallas moves deeper into the season.
