FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys entered the offseason knowing changes were necessary, particularly on defense.
After finishing 30th in the NFL and allowing a franchise-record 511 points last season, Dallas has spent the opening stretch of free agency reshaping its roster with a clear emphasis on rebuilding the defensive unit.
The process started with the hiring of new defensive coordinator Chris Parker, a move the organization hopes will help reset the identity of a defense that struggled throughout 2025.
From there, the Cowboys began making personnel moves to support that shift.
Dallas traded wide receiver Jalen Tolbert to the Miami Dolphins, while also parting ways with defensive tackles Osa Odighizuwa and Solomon Thomas as the front office looked to reshape the defensive front.
In their place, the Cowboys have focused on adding depth and versatility.
Edge rushers Rashawn Garrett and Tyrus Wheat were brought in to help strengthen the pass rush, while the team also welcomed back Sam Williams. The secondary received reinforcements as well, with the additions of safeties Jalen Thompson and P.J. Locke, along with cornerback Cobie Durant.
From the team’s perspective, the goal is clear: improve a defense that struggled to consistently get stops last season.
And the Cowboys may not be finished yet.
Speculation has surfaced around star edge rusher Maxx Crosby, and while owner and general manager Jerry Jones acknowledged the discussion, he stopped short of suggesting a deal is imminent. Jones noted he doesn’t anticipate a move but also made it clear the organization isn’t ruling out any opportunities to improve the roster.
With free agency still unfolding and the NFL Draft approaching, the Cowboys appear committed to continuing their defensive overhaul as they look to rebound heading into the 2026 season.
