DENTON, TX — North Texas rolled past South Alabama 36-22 on Saturday, improving to 5-0 for the first time since 1959.
Freshman RB Caleb Hawkins exploded for 140 rushing yards, 78 receiving yards, and three touchdowns, including a 68-yard score — UNT’s longest play of the season. He now leads all FBS freshmen with seven rushing TDs.
QB Drew Mestemaker threw for 234 yards and two total TDs, while UNT’s defense forced another turnover — their 11th this season — with Ethan Wesloski snagging his first career INT.
Linebackers Trey Fields (14 tackles) and Shane Whitter (12) anchored a unit that has now helped UNT score 66 points off turnovers this year — the most since 2018.
The Mean Green have now scored 30+ in five straight games and will look to go 6-0 for the first time in 66 years when they host South Florida on Oct. 10.
