FRISCO, TEXAS — The No. 1 and 10 teams in Major League Soccer’s Western Conference fought on a hot Saturday night at Toyota Stadium—FC Dallas, the home team, losing 3-2 on home soil to San Diego FC.
In the second meeting between the two sides, 10 total goals have been scored. Last month, San Diego handed Dallas a 5-0 loss at Snapdragon Stadium.
In tonight’s match, Anders Dreyer scored first on a penalty kick after Patrickson Delgado committed a foul in the box, to put San Diego FC on the board.
What was thought to be the goal that leveled it came 10 minutes later: in the 35th minute, Lucho Acosta bended one from just outside the left corner of the 18-yard box into the top back right corner.
That goal was called back due to offside.
Another 10 minutes later, Petar Musa scored Dallas’ official first goal, and his fourth in the last five matches, against the western conference’s winningest team after cutting back inside the box to his right foot, he bent it past CJ Dos Santos.
Musa and Acosta have now combined for seven goals in their last five games.
Before the half, San Diego scored another, but it also did not count due to offside.
10 minutes into the second half, yet another FCD goal was called offside. Two minutes later, Sebastian Lletget scored his first of the season and Dallas’ second official goal of the game to give FCD the lead.
But then, “we let our guard down,” said head coach Eric Quill.
Then, SDFC made it 2-all in the 76th minute. And finally, sealed the 3-2 win over FCD with a goal with just three minutes to go in extra time.
“We have to stop bleeding goals,” said Quill.
“We are where we are because we don’t play an entire 95+ [minutes],” he said when asked about the details that go into winning.
FCD will host Minnesota United FC, the Western Conference’s third place team, next week on July 4.
