Mavericks Fall to Nets, 113-109

DALLAS, TEXAS — Monday night brought a renewed sense of hope to the American Airlines Center as the Dallas Mavericks welcomed back Daniel Gafford in their matchup against the Brooklyn Nets. Despite the boost, the Mavericks fell short, suffering a narrow 113-109 loss.

With Dallas facing numerous challenges throughout the season, Gafford’s return alongside Anthony Davis provided a much-needed spark, bringing energy to the defense and excitement to the fans. In the four previous games Davis had played, the Mavericks emerged victorious, reinforcing the impact he brings to the court. His message in his first game, “I’m here,” resonated once again as he and Gafford worked together to solidify Dallas’ defense.

Gafford’s presence was particularly felt on the boards, an area where the Mavericks had struggled in their last five games. His return saw Dallas dominate the rebounding battle, leading by at least 10 throughout the game and finishing with 49 total rebounds.

While the game wasn’t dominated by three-point shooting, it was a contest marked by constant lead changes and momentum swings. Naji Marshall provided a highlight moment, sinking a shot-clock buzzer-beater three-pointer to push the Mavericks ahead by 10 early in the fourth quarter. However, the lead quickly evaporated, and Dallas found itself down by two with just nine seconds remaining.

Following the game, Head Coach Jason Kidd praised Gafford’s performance, stating, “Gafford was really good on both ends for his first game, and we tried to pair him with AD as much as we could.”

Six Mavericks players finished in double digits, with PJ Washington leading the way with 13 points, 2 assists, and 5 rebounds.

The Mavericks will remain at home as they prepare to face the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night, looking to bounce back from this tough loss.
