SMU vs Nevada Preview

NEVADA — SMU’s transition to a Power Four program kicks off with a highly-anticipated match against Nevada in the opening week of the college football season. Despite the elongated gap since their last encounter, the Mustangs and the Wolf Pack share a significant history as former members of the WAC from 2000 to 2004, clashing annually during that period.

This Saturday marks an important milestone for SMU as they officially debut as an ACC program. While the Mustangs are no strangers to facing formidable opponents like Texas, Texas A&M, and Arkansas during their time in the Southwest Conference, this transition represents a substantial adjustment for the team in the contemporary era.

Head coach Rhett Lashlee has provided clarity on the starting quarterback situation, confirming that Preston Stone, who held the starting position through 2023 until a late-season leg injury, will lead the team on Saturday against Nevada. Lashlee also noted that Kevin Jennings, who stepped in admirably during Stone’s absence, will see playing time. However, with a fit Stone, reclaiming the starting role will be a challenge. Lashlee aims to thoroughly assess both quarterbacks before the season progresses.
