Flagg’s Historic Night Powers Mavericks Past Lakers, 134-128

DALLAS — In a season that has often tested their resilience, the Dallas Mavericks delivered one of their most electrifying performances Sunday night, riding a historic outing from rookie sensation Cooper Flagg to a 134-128 win over the Los Angeles Lakers at American Airlines Center.

Dallas (25-53) lit up the scoreboard with one of its most efficient offensive displays of the year, marking its 13th game with at least 130 points — tying for the third-highest total in a single season in franchise history. The Mavericks shot confidently from beyond the arc, knocking down 14 of 32 attempts (43.8%), continuing a trend of success when their perimeter game is clicking.

But the night belonged to Flagg.

The 19-year-old rookie followed up his 51-point performance earlier in the week with another jaw-dropping effort, pouring in 45 points while stuffing the stat sheet with eight rebounds, nine assists, two steals and a block. In doing so, Flagg became just the second rookie since the NBA-ABA merger to record back-to-back 40-point games, joining Hall of Famer Allen Iverson. He also placed himself alongside legends like Wilt Chamberlain and Walt Bellamy as one of the only rookies to produce consecutive 45-point outings.

Flagg wasted no time asserting himself, erupting for 19 points in the opening quarter — the most ever by a teenager in the play-by-play era. By halftime, he had already compiled a stat line rarely seen from a rookie, becoming the first in that era to post at least 26 points, five rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block in a single half.

His recent scoring surge has also placed him in elite company. Across his last two games, Flagg has totaled 96 points, tying Chamberlain for the fifth-highest two-game scoring stretch by a rookie in league history. He now owns four 40-point games this season — the most ever by a teenager, surpassing LeBron James.

Dallas complemented Flagg’s brilliance with balanced contributions. Naji Marshall delivered a steady all-around performance with 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, marking his ninth game this season with at least 10 points, five rebounds and five assists. Veteran sharpshooter Klay Thompson added 11 points, connecting on three 3-pointers as he continues his climb up the league’s all-time shooting lists.

Defensively, the Mavericks were equally disruptive, recording 11 steals — their highest total in a season since 2014-15 — helping fuel transition opportunities that kept the Lakers on their heels.

Los Angeles (50-28) stayed within striking distance behind a vintage performance from LeBron James, who finished with 30 points, 15 assists and nine rebounds in one of the most complete outings of his season. It marked just the second time in a non-overtime game that James has posted at least 30 points, five rebounds and 15 assists.

Luke Kennard added a career-first triple-double with 15 points, 16 rebounds and 11 assists, while Rui Hachimura chipped in 21 points and seven rebounds in a strong supporting effort.

Still, the night ultimately underscored a changing of the guard. On a floor that has hosted some of the game’s biggest names, it was Flagg who commanded the spotlight — delivering a performance that not only secured a win for Dallas, but further cemented his place among the most remarkable rookie seasons the league has ever seen.
