BOSTON — The Boston Celtics controlled the tempo from the opening quarter and pulled away late to defeat the Dallas Mavericks 120-100 on Saturday night at TD Garden.
The game marked a special homecoming for Dallas rookie Cooper Flagg, the No. 1 overall pick and a Maine native, who was playing his first NBA game in Boston. Flagg delivered a well-rounded performance despite the loss, finishing with 16 points, eight rebounds, and six assists while showing flashes of the versatility that made him the top selection in the draft.
Boston’s offense proved difficult for Dallas to slow down throughout the night, with the Celtics building momentum in the second half to create separation on the scoreboard.
Veteran guard Klay Thompson led the Mavericks in scoring with 19 points, knocking down several perimeter shots to keep Dallas within striking distance early. Naji Marshall added 13 points off the wing, providing additional scoring support.
However, Dallas struggled to keep pace with Boston’s offensive rhythm as the Celtics steadily extended their lead in the final quarter to secure the 20-point victory.
For Flagg, the night carried added significance. Playing in front of a New England crowd that followed his rise from Maine to the NBA, the rookie showcased his playmaking ability and composure in a high-profile environment.
Dallas now turns its focus to regrouping after the loss as the Mavericks continue their road swing.
