BERKELEY, Calif. — SMU’s strong November run ended in a tight 38–35 loss at Cal on Saturday, despite a productive day on both sides of the ball.
Quarterback Kevin Jennings accounted for three touchdowns, throwing for 250 yards and adding a rushing score as the Mustangs (8–4, 6–2 ACC) spread the ball to eight different receivers. Matthew Hibner finished with 87 yards and a touchdown, while Jordan Hudson added a score of his own.
Running back Chris Johnson Jr. delivered a breakout performance with a career-high 128 rushing yards and his first 100-yard game. TJ Harden added 44 yards and a touchdown.
SMU outgained Cal 477–452 and matched the Bears on third down, but couldn’t hold off a late push. Linebacker Ahmaad Moses led the Mustang defense with 10 tackles, and SMU recorded five tackles for loss.
The defeat snaps SMU’s strong November momentum and sends the Mustangs into bowl season at 8–4.
