Cowboys Beat The Giants 40-37 In Overtime

ARLINGTON, TEXAS — Make that a 14th straight victory for Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Dak Prescott over the New York Giants, after today’s 40-37 overtime win.

The Giants’ first drive was a scoring one. 16 plays and four penalties, all of which were called on offensive lineman James Hudson III—two personal fouls and two false starts—ultimately led to kicker Graham Gano’s 38-yard field goal kick.

A delay of game on Prescott’s QB sneak ended Dallas’ first drive, forcing them to punt it away.

A second field goal in as many drives made it 6-0 Giants just before the end of the first quarter, while Bryan Anger punted away the Cowboys’ second drive, after just 2 yards of offense.

Next, Brandon Aubrey’s 51-yard field goal got Dallas on the board, but New York found the end zone first—QB Russel Wilson finding wide receiver Malik Nabers, who was closely guarded by cornerback Trevon Diggs, for a 29-yard touchdown.

The next drive, Prescott found WR KaVontae Turpin for a Cowboys TD, and Aubrey’s point-after-touchdown got Dallas back within 3. Turpin would later leave the game due to a neck injury, and would not return—instead, wearing a neck brace when leaving AT&T Stadium.

Dallas took its first lead of the game with just over seven minutes to go in the third quarter; a 30-yard TD run from running back Javonte Williams—his third rushing TD of the season and longest of his career—making it 17-13 in favor of the home side.

After the Giants kicked another field goal to bring them within 1, Aubrey made things 20-16 at the top of the fourth quarter.

Rookie RB Cam Skattebo’s 1-yard TD run and Gano’s PAT gave the Giants a 23-20 lead with just over 12 minutes to go in the game.

Six minutes later, RB Miles Sanders ran in a TD—his first wearing the Star—to end an 85-yard scoring drive. Both WRs CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens were instrumental in connecting with Prescott along the drive to put the Cowboys in position to regain the lead.

Soon after, Jaxson Dart made a quick rookie debut, playing just a few downs, before Wilson found Wan’Dale Robinson for a 32-yard scoring strike.

But Pickens answered with a nimble two feet in the end zone for a 6-yard TD catch. His first TD as a Cowboy, what Lamb says is “the first of many” for him, came at what one would have thought was at just the right time…

Wilson and Nabers had other plans, combining for a 48-yard touchdown leaving the Cowboys just 25 seconds to try and muster a comeback.

And tie it, the Cowboys did—Aubrey’s 64-yarder forced overtime after making it 37-all.

Safety Donovan Wilson’s interception gave the Cowboys the ball back for a third drive in OT—one that Aubrey would score another FG on, a 46-yarder, to end this one in Dallas with a home victory.

His first and second career walk-off FGs for the former soccer and USFL Birmingham Stallion; as long as they get it to the star symbol in the middle of the field, Lamb said “everything else is on Aubrey,” who delivered when it mattered in this one.

It was Brian Schottenheimer’s first win as a head coach in the NFL, who was given the game ball afterwards.

The win is also Prescott’s 14th-straight as a starter over the Giants, making it the second-longest streak by a QB over an NFL franchise—a streak, he says, that this game made hard to keep going. Prescott finished 38 of 52 for 361 yards, 2 TDs and 1 interception.

Wilson, on the other hand, was a bright sport for the Giants: 30 for 41 for 450 yards and 3 TDs, despite his 1 INT. And so were both Nabers and Robsinson Jr. carried New York’s WR room, each with more than 100 yards in this game: Nabers with 167, Robinson Jr. with 142.

This game was the second time the Cowboys recorded 16 wins over 17 games against a single opponent—they did it last back in the 90s against the Arizona Cardinals.

Lamb had nine receptions for a second-straight 100-plus yard game—recording at least 100 yards in four consecutive games, including last season, is the longest active streak in the NFL.

Another injury to keep an eye out for: center Cooper BeeBee was replaced with Jack Sanborn because of an ankle injury, and his status is to be determined.

The Cowboys will head out to Illinois to face the Chicago Bears next Sunday.
