KALAMAZOO, MI — North Texas overcame a 14-point deficit and pulled out a 33-30 overtime win over Western Michigan in the first-ever meeting between the programs. With the win, UNT improved to 4-2 all-time in overtime and a perfect 3-0 in road OT games.
Running back Makenzie McGill II powered in the game-winning touchdown in overtime, capping off a career-high 102-yard rushing day. Quarterback Drew Mestemaker threw for 224 yards and two scores, including the game-tying TD late in the fourth.
The Mean Green, now 2-0 for the second straight year, never led during regulation — a first in program history — but found a way to win in extra time. It was their first overtime game since 2021 and their first under head coach Eric Morris.
UNT’s defense held strong late, allowing just 30 points through two games — their best start defensively since 2002. Linebackers Shane Whitter and Trey Fields combined for 23 tackles, while Ethan Day recorded a sack in back-to-back games.
Special teams remained perfect as kicker Kali Nguma went 2-for-2 on field goals and 3-for-3 on PATs, extending his career extra-point streak to 64.
Next up, UNT returns home to host UTEP with a chance to go 3-0 for the first time since 1994.
