DENTON, Texas – North Texas opened the 2025 season in dominant fashion, crushing Lamar 51-0 at DATCU Stadium for their first shutout since 2003 and largest since 1976.

Redshirt freshman QB Drew Mestemaker threw for 329 yards and three touchdowns while adding a rushing score. UNT racked up 37 first-half points—the most in an opening half since 2022—and had nine players record a catch.

The defense, under new coordinator Skyler Cassity, held Lamar to just 31 rushing yards and forced two turnovers. Ethan Wesloski led the unit with a forced fumble, recovery for a touchdown, and seven tackles.

UNT improves its all-time series lead over Lamar to 6-2 and remains undefeated (10-0) under Eric Morris when leading after three quarters.

The Mean Green (1-0) hit the road next week to face Western Michigan.
