SMU Defeats Navy

DALLAS, TX – SMU wrapped up their second conference game with a 40-43 win over the Navy on Friday night. Despite coming off a three game losing streak, the Mustangs showed up ready to prove why they should be a team worthy of competing for a conference title.

The unfortunate theme for SMU this season has been a struggle to finish just as hard as they started. On Friday, the Mustangs gave up their lead in the second half but were able to quickly turn it around and secure a win.

After the game, Head Coach Rhett Lashlee told the media that he was very proud of how his team performed against the Navy, but to put it plainly, his team just needed a win.

“I was really proud of how we finished,” Lashlee said. “That’s something we hadn’t been doing.”

SMU quarterback Tanner Mordecai had an explosive game, completing 20-of-27 passes for 336 yards and 3 touchdowns. Mordecai also ran for a 60-yard touchdown, leading his team in rushing yards at the end of the game.

“We’ve had a rough stretch,” Mordecai said. “Things that happened to us that we thought wer in our control and stuff that we messed up, so it’s huge for us.”

With the win over the Navy, SMU is now 3-3, and will host Cincinati next Saturday for their third conference game.
