Dallas Cowboys Sign USFL MVP Kavontae Turpin

OXNARD, CA – The Dallas Cowboys signed USFL MVP Kavontae Turpin on Thursday morning before the second day of training camp got underway in Oxnard.

The 90 man roster was full so the Cowboys had to make some moves in order to make room for him. In doing so they waived fullback Nick Ralston, who was a 2021 undrafted free-agent.

Adding Turpin to the roster gives the Cowboys another weapon on offense that some would say they need. Having Turpin will ease up the workload on RB Tony Pollard and WR Ceedee Lamb.

Turpin put up some numbers in the USFL, leading with 540 receiving yards for four touchdowns on 44 receptions in 10 games. Not only did he lead the USFL in receiving yards but he added 184 punt return yards.

With Lamb being the new WR1 in town since Michael Gallup is not ready to come back from the torn ACL and the Amari Cooper trade Lamb has filled the spot of WR1 for the season in Dallas. That will eliminate Lamb exposure to the punt return game. Turpin is phenomenal in that area and will help Dallas.

In the Thursday morning press conference Mike McCarthy talked about why they decided to go with Turpin.

“I think that was the starting point. I think when you look at him, he’s a returner and that his responsibility on offense will be secondary. He has some Tony Pollard type traits from an offensive perspective.”
