FRISCO, TX — Cowboys’ defensive tackle Gerald McCoy ruptured his right quad tendon in practice on Monday and will miss the entire 2020 season per Stephen Jones.

McCoy reportedly worked with nose tackle Antwaun Woods in a drill before falling awkwardly in the club’s first padded practice of training camp in the Ford Center. He could not put pressure on the leg and had to be helped off the field.

The 32-year-old signed a three-year, $18.3 million contract with the Cowboys in March. He was going to help bolster the interior of Dallas’ defensive line after the departure of Maliek Collins in free agency to the Las Vegas Raiders. McCoy had already made a sizeable impact on the field in practice and inside the locker room.

“ You wanna talk about a phenomenal guy, “ center Joe Looney remarked on McCoy via conference call earlier in the week. “ He’s a great guy and really loves the Lord, which is amazing. He’s admonishing guys in the locker room and making sure that, you know, telling guys that eh football isn’t the biggest thing. The biggest thing you are going to do in your life is not playing in the NFL. I think that’s so important number one, but I mean as a player dude is just unbelievable. Man you watch him practice, you watch him play, and we’re just lucky to have him on our side of the ball now.”

With McCoy’s absence, the Cowboys will likely proceed with Tyrone Crawford to start beside nose tackle Dontari Poe in their base 4-3 defense. Crawford missed all but four games last season following a double hip surgery. He was recently activated off PUP and McCarthy noted on Monday, “ He looks very good and his flexibility to play outside and inside is exactly what I’m looking for.”

McCoy would have been a notable force inside for Dallas. This is a devastating loss on defense. Thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family!
