SMU Beats East Carolina 59-51

DALLAS, Texas — The SMU Mustangs hosted East Carolina for a homecoming matchup Saturday afternoon. The mustangs were looking to get back in the win column after falling last week to Memphis for their first loss of the season.

The Pirates came to Dallas still searching for its first conference win. East Carolina gave the Mustangs a good fight in a back and forth game, but in the end it was SMU who came out on top, 59-51.

Both quarterbacks put up big numbers today, SMU’s Shane Buechele threw for 414 yards and 5 touchdowns while East Carolina’s Holton Ahlers finished with 498 passing yards. Mustang running back Xavier Jones rushed for three touchdowns, putting him at 20 total for this year, breaking SMU’s single season record previously held by Eric Dickerson.

SMU wide receiver Kylen Granson also had three touchdowns on the day. After the game Granson said it was his first ever three-TD game of his career at any level. He finished with a season-high seven receptions and 138 yards receiving.

There was 110 total points scored in this game, but not once did SMU give up its lead. The Mustangs have off this coming week before they head to Navy for its final road game of the regular season.
